Welcome to ESOL at New Prospect with Ms. Chan
ESOL is important to your child’s continued development as a learner and I appreciate the opportunity to work with your child. Your partnership is essential to your child’s success, so please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at any time throughout the year.
I moved to Georgia in 2012 with my husband. Prior to moving, I taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in Montgomery County, Maryland for seven years as a classroom teacher. I graduated from the University of Maryland in 2005 with a B.S. in Sociology and a B.A. in Elementary Education. I also attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated with a M.S. in Teacher Leadership and English as a Second Language. I am currently pursuing a Ed.S. in Educational Leadership at Kennesaw State University.
As an ESOL teacher, my goal is to create a classroom where learning experiences are meaningful and applicable. I love teaching science and math and find that it is a natural way to teach children content and vocabulary and also incorporate English language skills. It is important for me to incorporate what your child learns in ESOL into his/her homeroom and I will be working with each grade level to ensure that your child is being supported. While many ESOL students are fluent in conversational skills in English, academic language and vocabulary, as well as reading and writing conventions, are typically more difficult and take longer to master.
