I hope everyone had a great 4 day weekend! On Monday, February 18, we celebrate Presidents' Day (and Ms. Chan's birthday!). Did you know that originally Presidents' Day was on February 22 to celebrate George Washington's birthday? Here are Ten Things Kids Might Not Know about President's Day. For more information about presidents, check out this USA for Kids site. This week, we will finally be done with ACCESS testing and will return to our normal schedule.
ACCESS Testing Continuing This WeekAll of the students have been working hard throughout testing. It's not always fun, but we'll get through it. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have been taking their Checkpoints tests last week and some of their times have interfered with their scheduled ACCESS testing time. Due to the overlap in testing times, several testing groups have new times. All students have a new scheduled time and we will finish testing as soon as possible. :) Please contact Ms. Chan if you are concerned that this will affect your child. Donate to Donors ChooseI have set up a DonorsChoose project to fund the purchase of recordable microphones and speaking cards. These will be put to good use in our room to practice our speaking skills. Please consider donating to our project or asking others to donate to help your children practice speaking clearly and fluenty in English. Please share our link, spread the word to friends and family, and donate to our project by February 17 to have your donation matched dollar for dollar. Use the code "INSPIRE" on the payment page. Thanks for all your support! http://www.donorschoose.org/esolwithmschan ACCESS Testing This WeekYour student will be tested this year to determine progress in learning English. Students will be taking the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State (ACCESS) Test between February 4 – 14, 2013. The testing is mandated by the federal government and includes all students who are identified as English Language Learners (ELLs), whether they are receiving services or not. During this time, all normally scheduled ESOL classes will be canceled. The ACCESS test is an important test that provides useful information about your child’s progress in learning English. Students will be tested for English language skill with a focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Results from the test will assist us in planning instruction for your child. While we want all students to do their best, please be careful not to create undue anxiety in your child. Tests will be taken in small groups over four separate testing sessions It is important that your child comes to school each day prepared for testing. Making up a missed test means time out of class and losing important learning time that cannot be made up. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information regarding ACCESS or visit www.wida.us/ACCESS to learn more information about our testing. |
