This week our schedule has been interrupted by many meetings and STAR testing. I'm sad that I did not get to see as many groups as I would have liked, but we'll get on track soon!
1st grade has continued to work on fictional story elements and point of views of stories. We discussed that 1st person point of view is when a story is told by a character and 3rd person point of view is when the story is told by a narrator. We read Diary of a Worm, Memoirs of a Goldfish, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears to discuss these elements. These books would be great additions to have your child read at home!
2nd graders are also working on story elements and using details to explain point of view and how different characters have different points of view in a story. We read Jack's Tale and Giant's Tale and discussed how the story was the same, but because it was told by a different person, they had different thoughts about the same events.
3rd graders are wrapping up their first narratives and are beginning to discuss our second narrative about an important person. We worked on family trees to help us explain different names that we call family members and are choosing an important person in our family that we would like to tell others about. It's been so cool to learn all the Spanish, Vietnamese, Hebrew, and Chinese names we use in our family.
4th & 5th graders have been reading nonfiction. We've made a text features chart to help us see all the things that authors do to help make nonfiction easier to understand. It is important that when we read nonfiction that we actually use resources like the table of contents, captions, glossaries and indexes so we don't have to read an entire nonfiction book cover to cover.
Conferences
Several parents have asked for additional conferences to discuss ESOL progress for their students. I am more than happy to meet with you at a different time or attend the conference scheduled with your child's teacher. If you would like to meet with me in addition to your child's homeroom teacher, please e-mail me or let your child's teacher know.
