I hope you enjoy your day off, but it's also important to understand why we celebrate this day. Monday is when we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. To learn more about his life, find more resources here.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Biography
This week in ESOL...
4th and 5th graders are going to continue reading Greek myths this week. Last week we went to the media center with Mrs. Bercher and learned about two online resources - Destiny and Galileo that are safe search sites for kids. Greek myths are important to know because there are a lot of allusions in stories that refer to Greek myths.
3rd graders are beginning to write opinion pieces uses vocabulary related to giving advice. We will be writing about the best way to keep our waters clean and to help our environment.
2nd graders have been reading poems! This is always a fun unit, but can be difficult with all of the figurative language. Personification has been really hard for us, but we'll keep practicing. This week, we will be reading more poems and finding other figurative language that poets use to make poems more interesting.
1st graders have been reading nonfiction and learning text features. We will be reading more nonfiction books this week and will be explaining how the text features help us when we read.
**Due to STAR testing, there are a few days that I will have to cancel classes in order to accommodate for students.
To find out more about STAR tests and our upcoming ACCESS tests for ELLs that will start February 3, please attend a parent workshop with our Bilingual Community Liaison, Ivon Van der Lende on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30.
