We had a pretty crazy scheduling week last week due to hearing and vision screening, an out of school meeting, and picture day. Sadly, our schedule will continue to be a bit hectic in the next two weeks due to the STAR early literacy, reading, and math testing schedule. This week in ESOL...
4th and 5th graders continued working on inferences and investigating characters. Inferences is a very difficult concept and we will continue to spiral back to using inferences when we discuss other reading topics. Students enjoyed playing a version of Taboo to give clues to other students about a topic. This builds students' use of descriptive language and using key vocabulary in their speaking skills. It also requires students to use their background knowledge and listen closely in order to understand descriptions. This is a great game to practice listening and speaking skills at home.
3rd graders continued working on writing their first narrative. Although we had plans to start our new narrative, we are taking a little bit more time to wrap up our writing before we move on. Throughout our writing, we will be using the 6+1 traits. Read more information about the traits from Education Northwest.
2nd graders worked on investigating characters and plot. We discussed using a plot rollercoaster to explain events in a story and also discussed how and why characters change. We have been successfully using Words Their Way which is allowing students to focus on specific areas of reading and writing word patterns to practice.
1st graders were introduced to some different learning centers this week. Because the students are working on many different skills, it is important that students work on areas where they need support and move on from areas where they have already been successful. We have continued to read different stories to discuss story elements and have focused this week on characters' feelings and traits.
Just a reminder that my schedule will be adjusted next week due to different meetings and testing. :( I'm looking forward to a "normal" week for all the ESOL students.
